Michael Owen criticised Kurt Zouma after Chelsea’s Champions League draw against Sevilla and claimed the defender ‘fills you with fear’.
Frank Lampard’s side began their Champions League campaign with a 0-0 draw against Europa League champions Sevilla on Tuesday night.
It was Chelsea’s first goalless draw under Lampard, who was appointed as manager in the summer of 2019, and Owen was full of praise for Thiago Silva’s performance.
The former England striker was less than impressed with his centre-back partner Zouma, however, and said he is a player that ‘fills you with fear’.
‘Zouma next to him [Silva] fills you with a bit of fear,’ Owen told BT Sport.
‘But as soon as you see the ball go into Silva you relax and that’s what the whole team will be feeling that.
‘As soon as he in possession or is part of the team he spreads that confidence to everybody.’
Lampard was full of praise for Chelsea summer signing Silva following the goalless draw at Stamford Bridge and said: ‘He was very good.
‘I spoke about quality and experience before the game and he brought both of those and that affects others around him.
‘He was a big plus in terms of us getting a clean sheet.’
Lampard also confirmed new signing Edouard Mendy has already established himself as Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper after again ‘showing his quality’ against Sevilla.
Chelsea signed Mendy from Rennes in September and he has already replaced record-signing Kepa Arrizabalaga as the club’s No 1.
‘At the moment, yes. He’s shown his quality,’ Lampard said of Mendy.
‘The way he’s played, he’s played very well, that’s two clean sheets for him already.
‘As it stands he is the number one but that’s always up for grabs. But the way he’s playing I’m very happy.’
