Houssem Aouar and Thomas Partey tipped to make ‘massive difference’ in Arsenal double deal

Arsenal targets Houssem Aouar and Thomas Partey can make a “massive difference” to Mikel Arteta’s team, according to former Gunners midfielder Adrian Clarke. Lyon star Aouar is Arteta’s priority signing ahead of next Monday’s transfer deadline. However, Arsenal are still interested in Atletico Madrid star Partey.

Arsenal know how much they have to spend to sign Partey, with the player having a £45million release clause in his Atletico contract.

A deal for Aouar is more complicated, with Lyon having rejected at least one bid for the player already this summer.

Reports claim Arsenal are set to offer £36m plus £9m in add-ons for the 22-year-old this week.

Clarke believes Partey and Aouar are the right type of players to take Arteta’s side to the next level.

And he thinks the duo could flourish under the Spanish manager.

“I think that the two players they’ve been linked with – Thomas Partey and Houssem Aouar – they are absolutely tailor-made to improve the Arsenal team,” Clarke said on talkSPORT.

“They are stylistically the two players that the team needs at the moment to go to the next level.

“Because I do believe in the coach. I think Arsenal have got a coach who is better than Lampard, who is better than Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who is better than Jose Mourinho right now, the version of Jose right now.

“I wouldn’t swap Mikel Arteta for any of those guys, and I don’t think many Arsenal fans would.

“What he needs is the squad now to compete with those rivals, and I think the addition of two midfielders would make a massive difference.”

Arsenal lost 3-1 to Liverpool on Monday to suffer their first Premier League defeat of the season.

Arteta was asked about the potential of signing Aouar in his post-match press conference.

However, he refused to comment on particular targets.

“We don’t have any news on new players,” Arteta said.

“It’s a week to go and I think it’s going to be really busy for the clubs because not much business has been done. Let’s see what happens.

I think it will be really busy for the Premier League. I don’t know for us how it’s going to happen.”

Arsenal will aim to bounce back from the defeat when they host Sheffield United at the Emirates on Sunday.
