Ian St John tributes led by Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher after death at 82

Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher have led the tributes for Ian St John on social media following news of the Liverpool legend’s passing.

St John, who made over 400 appearances for Liverpool during his iconic 10-year spell at Anfield, died at the age of 82 on Monday night following a lengthy battle with illness.

A statement from the Welshman’s family reads: “It is with a heavy heart that we have to inform you that after a long illness we have lost a husband, father and grandfather. He passed away peacefully with his family at his bedside.

“We would like to thank all the staff at Arrowe Park Hospital for their hard work and dedication during these very difficult times. The family would be grateful for privacy at this extremely sad time.”

Tributes have started pouring in for St John on social media, with former Liverpool captain Gerrard posting a picture of the Scotsman on Instagram and writing: “Rest in peace Ian St John”.

Ex-Reds centre-back Carragher also produced a tribute to St John and wrote: “RIP Ian St John – one of the men who made @liverpoolfc what it is today. Legend on the pitch & off it, I’ll always remember him on tv on the Saint & Greavsie show. #rip”.

Current Liverpool defender Andy Robertson uploaded a photo that shows him with St John and said: “A man of warmth, humour, knowledge, wisdom and joy. Such a privilege to meet with him and to listen to his stories.

“Also incredibly humbling to be given the opportunity to wear one of his shirts. Scotland and Liverpool has lost a true giant. My love goes to his family. Rest in peace Ian St John”.

  • Anfield legend Kenny Dalglish posted on Twitter: “RIP Saint. Ian St John was instrumental in making Liverpool FC the Club it is today. Long may he be remembered for all of the happy memories he has given to fans. Betsy and the family are very much in our thoughts. KD”.

    Former Tottenham and Chelsea striker Jimmy Greaves, who starred alongside St John in the popular Saturday football show Saint & Greavsie, also expressed his sadness at the news.

    Greaves posted: “We are very sad to hear the Saint has passed away Ian St John and I had great fun working on the Saint and Greavsie He was a lovely man & will be sadly missed by many many people. we must also remember he was a great footballer for Bill Shankly's Liverpool and beyond. #IanStJohn”.
