Arsenal legend Ian Wright wishes Donny van de Beek joined his former club instead of Manchester United this summer. Van de Beek remains the only player United have signed so far this summer. The Holland international joined the Red Devils from Ajax for £40million.
Quotes from Van de Beek’s agent emerged following the move to United that Arsenal were keen to sign the 23-year-old but could not afford him.
Van de Beek made a positive start to his United career, coming off the bench to score on his debut in the 3-1 loss to Crystal Palace on Saturday.
But Wright has questioned whether the midfielder was the type of player United needed, with Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes already at the club.
The pundit reckons Arsenal would have been better off with Van de Beek instead.

“He’s somebody that I wish that someone like Arsenal could have taken,” Wright said on the Kelly & Wrighty Show.
“When you look at Pogba, what he’s doing, and you look at Bruno Fernandes, that is Donny van de Beek’s position.

“People are thinking they are going to see Van de Beek, Fernandes and Pogba – I don’t think that’s going to happen.
“As much as he can play the No 6, that’s not his preferred position to play.

“So again, spend the money, yeah he’s a great player and yeah take him, but you’ve still got to look for the players that you know are going to improve your team.
“Listen, Donny van de Beek will be a good player for Man United as time goes by because he’s a quality player. Is he what they need right now? But I’m delighted for him.”
Van de Beek’s agent, Sjaak Swart, revealed in September that Arsenal were one of a number of clubs who wanted to sign Van de Beek before United got a deal over the line.
“Yes, they really wanted him,” Swart told Showtime.
“But they just couldn’t get the money for a transfer.
“Even the biggest clubs struggle. Arsenal is a great club, but Manchester United will certainly be an interesting adventure.
“There were more clubs with interest, such as Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Juventus and Arsenal. There were six in total.”
Van de Beek and United will be aiming for their first Premier League win of the season when they travel to Brighton on Saturday.
