Jamie Carragher names Smith Rowe ‘best in the league’ at running with the ball

Jamie Carragher has piled on the praise for Arsenal youngster Emile Smith Rowe, naming a quality in which the attacker is the ‘best in the league’.

The 21-year-old got on the scoresheet during the Gunner’s convincing 3-1 win over Aston Villa on Friday night – but it was his overall display that earned him many plaudits.

Carragher was one of them, hailing Smith Rowe as the best player in the league at running with the ball.

The Liverpool legend said to Sky Sports following Arsenal’s win: "He will get England caps, absolutely no doubt. It’s a nice problem for Gareth Southgate to have with the abundance of young attacking players.

"There’s no doubt he’ll get England caps but he’ll have to bide his time, I love this lad, I always want him to do well. And to watch him with full flow with the ball at his feet.

“He’s the best player in the league running with the ball. When he moves it just excites me. Running with both feet. He’s a special talent who can pop up in different positions which is important.”

"He’s a special talent, he can pop up in different positions. If you’re a young attacking player, you have to have the ability to play in all of the front four positions now. And I think he can play all four and that’s a real bonus from him."

Mikel Arteta, meanwhile, also spoke about the player’s ability, saying he was very happy to see Smith Rowe improving each week.

He said: "He should demand that in his game because he is capable of doing it. I’m pleased that that is developing. He still needs to develop more in other areas as well.

"The other night he wasn’t 100 per cent fit but he stepped forward and he wanted to play with a difficult injury that he had.

"There is no complaining, he is just looking forwards, he is really determined, he has changed the way he is living as well a little bit and some of the habits that he had and he’s been superb."

Croydon-born Smith Rowe began his career in the 2018–19 season for Arsenal’s Under 21s. Since being promoted to the first team in 2018, he’s featured in 55 games for the north London side, scoring ten times and becoming a crucial component in the Gunner's side.
