Jamie Carragher won’t like Liverpool’s plan to replace Jurgen Klopp with Steven Gerrard. The Reds’ owners FSG are believed to be monitoring Gerrard’s progress as Rangers boss amid fears Klopp could leave Anfield before the end of his contract.

Klopp is contracted to Liverpool until 2024, and it has long been expected he will take charge of the German national team when he eventually leaves Merseyside.

Gerrard has been viewed as a strong candidate to be Klopp’s long-term successor, with the Reds legend on the brink of leading Rangers to their first Scottish Premiership title since 2011.

However, the Sunday Mirror has claimed Gerrard could land his dream job sooner than expected, with Klopp reportedly open to leaving Liverpool early.

There is a growing expectation that Germany boss Joachim Low could be replaced following the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

And it is believed Klopp would seriously consider leaving Liverpool before the end of his contract – meaning he could take charge of Die Mannschaft before Germany hosts the European Championships in 2024.

That might not please Carragher, who recently said he felt it was too early for his long-time pal Gerrard to manage their former club.

Back in January, Carragher was talking about the struggles of then Chelsea boss Frank Lampard when he was asked about Gerrard’s prospects as a future Liverpool boss.

“Stevie Gerrard’s gone to Rangers – doing really well,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

“Looks like he’ll win the title this season. Would I want Steven Gerrard to be the Liverpool manager without more experience? Possibly not.

“Because I just think when you get those really big jobs and you haven’t got that experience you’ve got nothing to fall back on when times are tough as they will be for the next few weeks for Frank.

“Players of my generation, certainly me, I don’t want to go down to the lower leagues and learn about coaching.”

Carragher’s fears for Lampard proved well founded, as his former England team-mate was sacked as Chelsea manager a few weeks later.

And Liverpool fans will hope the same fate does not befall Gerrard if he does take over the Anfield hotseat.
