Kante’s Chelsea future could be in jeopardy if January transfer plans come off

N'Golo Kante's Chelsea career could be in danger if Frank Lampard lands Declan Rice in January.

The Blues were one of the most active teams in the transfer window over the summer.

Over £200m was spent after seven players arrived, including the likes of Ben Chilwell, Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech.

Lampard was keen on improving all areas of the squad, such as in goal and up front.

But one position that was left uncared for was in defensive midfield.

Chelsea have looked leaky at the back with Lampard in charge and it led him to believe that his backline has not got enough protection.

West Ham star Rice was eyed as the top target but the London outfit insisted the England international is not for sale t any price.

In the end, the Blues did not make an offer but are planning to revisit the situation in January.

And that could spell danger for Kante, who has also got a long list of suitors.

The Frenchman is seen as one of the best players in his position in the world, with Real Madrid and Barcelona interested in the past.

Antonio Conte's Inter Milan were the most keen over the summer but Chelsea refused to sell.

If Rice is signed, the Blues may have to rethink their position on Kante and could sell him on.

Meanwhile, Darren Bent believes signing Rice would be an upgrade on the former Leicester man.

"For me, Declan Rice would be an upgrade," former Tottenham striker Bent told talkSPORT.

"Not only because he can play that role really, really well, he can get about the pitch, has got good energy, reads the game really well.

"Not only that as well, he can drop into centre half, that's two positions he can play.

"N'Golo Kante has been a superb footballer and still is a great footballer. He won the Premier League with Leicester, went to Chelsea and won the Premier League and won the World Cup back in 2018.

"I just think for a season-and-a-half now he's not played in that role we know he is so good at."
