Kepa Arrizabalaga’s stance over Chelsea transfer negotiations with Edouard Mendy

Kepa Arrizabalaga is prepared to stay and fight for his place at Chelsea despite the club’s £18million move for Edouard Mendy.

Kepa, 25, endured a frustrating campaign in goal for the Blues last season, with his alarming save percentage of 54.5 per cent proving the second-lowest in the Premier League.

The Spaniard’s shaky form resulted in Chelsea conceding a worrying 54 goals in 38 games, and towards the end of the campaign Frank Lampard therefore opted to field backup keeper Willy Caballero in his place.

Reports suggest Lampard is now eyeing up a new shot-stopper in the shape of Mendy, who looks likely to join from Rennes this summer.

Nicolas Holveck, the French club’s president, said this week: “Discussions have started with Chelsea for Édouard Mendy.

“I can understand his desire, he told us he wants to leave. But for now there is no agreement and for a transfer you need an agreement of the three parties.”

Mendy, 28, helped Rennes secure a third-place Ligue 1 finish in his debut season at the club last term.

It is believed they have already lined up the player’s replacement in Granada’s Rui Silva, paving the way for him to join Chelsea.

But according to Matt Law of The Telegraph, Kepa is determined to knuckle down and fight for his place as Chelsea’s No.1 goalkeeper in the coming season.

Lampard will be securing his sixth major signing of the summer in Mendy, having already racked up a transfer bill of £210million.

Timo Werner (£54million) and Hakim Ziyech (£36million) have arrived at Stamford Bridge for a combined fee of £90million, while Ben Chilwell has joined in a £50million switch from Leicester.

The Blues paid nothing to sign Thiago Silva, who departed Paris St-Germain upon the expiry of his contract this summer, but they did fork out £71million to get their hands on Kai Havertz last Friday.

Mendy’s impending arrival will take their total summer outlay to almost £220million in what has proved a very expensive window for Roman Abramovich.
