Frank Lampard admits he wants to ‘freshen up’ his Chelsea squad this summer after failing to bring in any new faces in January… with Timo Werner and Philippe Coutinho among potential targets

  • The Blues failed to make an addition in January after their transfer ban was lifted
  • Lampard has thrived with a young squad but now wants big stars to join them
  • Philippe Coutinho and Timo Werner are both linked to a move to west London

Frank Lampard is determined to make amends for Chelsea’s barren January with an active summer window, hoping to refresh the Blues squad.

The Stamford Bridge outfit were barred from making additions last year, with FIFA punishing the club for rule breaches concerning academy players.

The two-window ban was lifted in time for January after an appeal, but Chelsea failed to bring in any new faces, frustrating their young manager.

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is intent on signing top talent in the summer transfer window

The Blues’ youthful squad have impressed despite making no new signings in January

RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner is one name being linked to a summer move to Stamford Bridge

Lampard has impressed with his youthful revolution of the Blues but is intent on adding some established talent to a squad packed with academy graduates.

‘I’m certainly excited about the squad we’ve got, with the young players and if we can get a few additions for areas I feel we need,’ the ex-midfielder told the club’s official magazine.

‘We didn’t bring in anyone in January, it didn’t work out to be right for us at the time, and last summer we couldn’t bring anyone in, so those windows are gone and we haven’t changed.

With wingers Willian and Pedro leaving in the summer, Chelsea are set for a refreshed look

Bayern Munich loanee Philippe Coutinho is also linked after a poor spell at Barcelona

The Blues are back on the training ground ahead of a return to match action on June 17th

‘So I am excited about the squad we’ve got, if we can freshen up in the right areas we all know that.’

The Blues have already sealed the signing of Hakim Ziyech from Ajax for £33m, but Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho and RB Leipzig sensation Timo Werner are also being linked to the club.

With Willian and Pedro also set to leave the club in the summer, Lampard looks like he will get his wish of a squad turnover.

The Blues sit fourth in the Premier League ahead of the restart on June 17, a finish that would surpass expectations in the Englishman’s first season in charge.
