Leeds United will miss out on Daniel James if Manchester United cannot sign Jadon Sancho.

Marcelo Bielsa has shown interest in the player that almost moved to Elland Road, before he left Swansea for Old Trafford, after their fine start to the new Premier League season.

The 22-year-old had a tremendous start to life under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but has since slipped behind Mason Greenwood in the pecking order and been linked with a move away from the Red Devils.

One further transfer that could see James leave the club for Leeds is one for England winger Sancho, but if that doesn’t get done this summer, they will be forced to look at alternatives.

The Sun have reported that United will not consider sending James out if they fail to agree a deal with Borussia Dortmund, and noted one of Leeds’ other targets as Todd Cantwell of Norwich.

Daily Star Sport reported last week that Leeds were waiting to see if James became surplus to requirements at United, which was delayed by their failure to get Gareth Bale on loan.

Inter Milan’s Ivan Perisic and Bournemouth playmaker David Brooks were outlined as other targets for Solskjaer’s side, which could have led to a loan with an option to buy for James.

Solskjaer still has a high opinion of the forward despite his lack of first-team action, and even described one of his attributes as being the best of anyone in Europe last year.

He said: ”He is probably the best defensive winger in the world with his honesty, commitment and the way he does his recovery runs and doing his back tackles.

"It is unbelievable, but that is also base for his attacking football because it gives him the space to run into, so I am not that surprised, though very pleased, of course.

"He is only going to improve by the coaching and the exposure he gets at Old Trafford because when you are not fazed by [being] a Manchester United player then the limit must be sky-high."

Brighton have also been linked with a move for James, who played under Graham Potter at Swansea.

Potter said of James in November: "I'm delighted for him, probably this time last year he wasn't playing this regularly for Swansea.

“But he's a great lad, his sprinting ability is sensational, he's so brave and he'll get better and better with his final ball and execution."

James said in response: "Obviously I know the gaffer well from last season. He takes big credit for why I am here today.”
