Liverpool and Everton fans clash over controversial Van Dijk Christmas gift

Fans of Liverpool and Everton are divided over a controversial Christmas gift handed to a Reds fan.

Virgil van Dijk had his season ended when he injured his ACL in a tackle from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford earlier this season.

The hot-tempered Merseyside derby has been a talking point between fans in the region ever since.

And with rivalries still going fierce, one Liverpool fan received a gift that split the opinion of supporters on Christmas Day.

The unnamed fan is said to have been given a framed image of the tackle which left Van Dijk stricken.

  • Arsenal are in relegation battle but who could they possibly get to replace Mikel Arteta?

The image of the picture was shared on Twitter by an Everton fan, who wrote: "Me mate just got this."

Responses from fans of numerous clubs were spectacular.

Everton fans enjoyed the dig, with one saying: "Fantastic. Although not nice to make fun of the deceased."

Another added: "Great present."

While a further fan added: "Love to see it."

But Liverpool fans were contrasted in their opinions, with plenty making reference to '1995' – the year Everton last won a major trophy.

One Liverpool supporter said: "Most exciting thing the bitters have done in 25 years."

Another added: "Imagine being that s*** of a club that this is the best thing you've got to celebrate."

While a neutral fan added: "The best thing about this is the reaction of Liverpool fans."

Other Liverpool fans shared pictures of gifts which they had received – with many being pictures of Liverpool lifting trophies over recent years.

The second Merseyside derby of the season takes place on the weekend of 20/21 February.
