Liverpool and Man City warned two Chelsea stars will make Blues ‘powerful’ in title race

Chelsea attackers Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech make Frank Lampard’s side a real threat in the Premier League title race says Cesc Fabregas, who is a huge fan of the latter in particular. The Blues are in fine form and are unbeaten in all of their last six league matches as they continue to gel.

Following a summer spend of almost £250million, Lampard’s new-look Chelsea team are still finding their rhythm but up top are beginning to get into a groove offensively.

Werner has four goals in his last four Premier League games while Ziyech, since returning from injury, has contributed a goal and three assists in his past two top-flight matches.

The two have also impressed in Europe as Chelsea look to transform themselves into a title challenger despite finishing well below Liverpool and Manchester City last term.

Neither of the two teams – who have won the last three league titles – are as invincible as they appeared in previous campaigns and Fabregas believes Chelsea can be “powerful” this term with Werner and Ziyech in full flow.

“He’s a very good player,” Fabregas told 90min of Moroccan playmaker Ziyech. “He has this vision that you need in a top team like Chelsea, who want to win and be champions.

“You could see that they were lacking ideas last season and maybe at the beginning of this season, but with Ziyech, you can see that he has this last pass.

“It’s not only that he sees it, it’s that he makes it right, at the right time. That’s the decision-making that we talk about nowadays.

“Why are coaches so tactical? Because they see the decision-making of the players is not that good, so they always need to teach them what to do.

“Before, I believe that coaches were not as on top of the players as they are now, they felt that maybe there was not as much need because the players already saw it themselves, but I believe that Ziyech is one of these players.

“He makes things happen, things that when the defenders don’t expect. They don’t expect the pass, you catch them sleeping and you have someone like Timo Werner making great runs in behind.

“I think this is where Chelsea could be so powerful this year.”

In a separate interview with the Daily Mail, Fabregas – who made just shy of 200 appearances at Stamford Bridge and won two titles – declared: “I like this team a lot.

“They added a lot of quality, speed and creativity which was missing. They also added leadership in Thiago Silva.

“They should aim to win the league this season because I believe with Liverpool and Man City they have the best squad talent-wise.”

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson believes he has identified one issue that could derail Chelsea’s hopes of winning the league this season, though.

Merson said: “The problem is going to be keeping everyone happy and that’s going to be the hardest job in the world. You are going to have top, top-draw players not playing, and that’s hard.

“Kai Havertz wasn’t even in the squad because he was unwell and Christian Pulisic is injured too. Mateo Kovacic played on Saturday, but he hasn’t been playing. That’s going to be the problem Chelsea have to contend with going forward.

“Is the squad too big? It depends how far they go in certain competitions, but that is where Mourinho was great. If you look at his Chelsea team and the squad he had at Stamford Bridge, you never heard anybody moaning.

“From the outside, you always thought, ‘wow’! How do you keep all those players happy? There’s got to be an art to it because when you’ve got that quality of player, to keep them all happy when they are not playing is a major skill.

“It’s alright people saying they get £100,000-a-week, they get paid well or whatever, but they want to play football. As a player, you want to play football and that will be Lampard’s biggest challenge going forward.

“They also have to play a better quality of opponent in the games coming up, but everything at the moment looks good.”
