Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp ‘surprised’ by Barcelona star Ousmane Dembele

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was surprised when Ousmane Dembele turned down a move to Anfield earlier in the transfer window, reports say. The France international could leave Barcelona, with Manchester United hot on his trail. However, he could move to Liverpool instead with Dembele said to be listening to an offer from the current Premier League champions.

Liverpool have already enjoyed a positive transfer window.

Things started slowly for the Premier League champions, with the Reds missing out on the signing of Timo Werner. Klopp wanted his compatriot but, in the end, the striker opted to move to England with Chelsea instead.

Liverpool have since responded well, however, capturing the marquee signings of Thiago Alcantara and Diogo Jota from Bayern Munich and Wolves respectively.

Despite that, though, Sport say the Reds are keen to secure the signing of Barcelona’s Dembele.

It’s claimed the Barcelona star is listening to an offer from the Merseyside giants as well as Manchester United, who want him as an alternative to Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho.

And the report also says that, when Liverpool were snubbed by Dembele earlier in the summer, Klopp was surprised.

Where the player ends up remains to be seen. Publicly, Barcelona have insisted they’ll not let their forward go but, with the club wanting money for new recruits, they can be talked around.

Dembele once lived in Klopp’s house at Barcelona and a report from BILD in 2017 claimed the Liverpool boss was angry when he found his property ‘trashed’ by the Frenchman.

However, it appears that hasn’t deterred the German from eyeing a blockbuster transfer with just days of the window remaining.

Former Liverpool star Danny Murphy has previously urged Klopp to sign Dembele, saying: “Dembele would be a fantastic signing for Liverpool.

“He’s not had the best time at Barcelona, but clearly has an abundance of talent and the ability to win games by himself.

“If he can recapture his belief in his ability, then Liverpool would have a formidable front three with him, Mane and Salah.

“When playing to his potential, I think he would edge Firmino out the first team.

“Firmino is the type of player that would raise his own game and everyone’s around him if Dembele came in to the team.

“He’ll fight for his place week in week out and if you’re not giving your all on the pitch, then Firmino will be right there to take it.”

Barcelona have shut down talk of Dembele moving to Manchester United, with technical director Ramon Planes saying: “First of all, no negotiations with Man United at the moment, completely deny that.

“He’s a player we count on, we know his potential. We hope this year the team sees the best of him.”

He then added: “We have a good squad, who have competed very well.

“There are always teams to reinforce. We are working with the coach. Daily communication.

“On an attacking level there is great potential and, defensively, it is true that it is weaker.

“We will work until the last day to bring the best and, if someone comes, who can be good. We will not sign for the sake of signing someone. Soon there will be another market.
