Liverpool could reportedly return to a former target of sporting director Michael Edwards for a cut-price £13million transfer this summer. Edwards is getting to work on refreshing Jurgen Klopp’s Reds squad, after a mostly disappointing season for the Anfield side which highlighted the weaknesses behind the starting line-up.
One area where this was particularly evident was in defence, after injuries to Virgil Van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip wiped out their starters in the position.
That saw Klopp forced to play midfielders Jordan Henderson and Fabinho in the heart of his defence, which had the effect of weaking the team further forwards.
Academy products Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips later became the first-choice pairing, though there remain question marks about their readiness for the Premier League.
Klopp and Edwards attempted to solve the problem in the January transfer window, bringing in Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies.

One man who could have joined instead of them is Duje Caleta-Car, with Liverpool reportedly having a bid in the region of £20m rejected by the defender’s club Marseille.
The 24-year-old has been a consistent performer for the Ligue 1 side, impressing with his ball-playing abilities.
Though his performances took a downturn after his failed move to Liverpool, Caleta-Car’s composure and eye for a pass continue to make him an option for a move.
He now has the chance to further impress at this summer’s Euro 2020, where he will compete with Dejan Lovren and Domagoj Vida for a place in Croatia’s backline.

But with Marseille in financial trouble and having missed out on a place in the top four by 16 points, departures from the Stade Vélodrome could be on the way.
Caleta-Car is one of those expected to depart the South of France this summer, having been a regular in Jorge Sampaoli’s team.
And if Liverpool wanted to boost their centre-back options, with Davies having failed to impress, Caleta-Car would be a cut-price option.
The Athletic report that while his club value him at £17.1m, he could be allowed to leave for as little as £13m.
It is believed that Marseille will not stand in the way of the defender leaving this summer, with the problem in January being they could not sign a replacement in time.
A move to the Premier League or the Bundesliga are thought to be the most likely landing spots, though the report states that currently no clubs are clear frontrunners for his signature.
According to The Athletic, Marseille are hopeful that a club playing Champions League football next season will move in, but it is believed he will join a club a step below that level.
While Liverpool have already signed Ibrahima Konate to boost their defensive options, the Frenchman’s injury history could see them make a return for Caleta-Car.
