Liverpool will not sign a new forward if Xherdan Shaqiri completes his transfer to Lyon due to the emergence of a couple of Jurgen Klopp’s teenage stars, according to reports.
Swiss winger Shaqiri is poised to end his frustrating spell at Anfield by joining the Ligue 1 side in a £9.5million transfer. Lyon initially wanted to pay around £4.3m.
The 29-year-old struggled to force his way into Klopp’s plans following his £15m move in 2018, with Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino almost impossible to displace.
He played in just 63 matches across all competitions during his three-year spell. There were just seven Premier League appearances during the club’s title-winning 2019-20 campaign.
Shaqiri’s imminent departure leaves a hole in Liverpool’s squad, but the Reds are unlikely to fill it with a transfer.

Instead, Klopp expects teen starlets Harvey Elliott and Kaide Gordon to step up when needed, according to the Liverpool Echo.
Elliott made his first Premier League start for Liverpool in their 2-0 victory over Burnley on Saturday. The 18-year-old impressed in pre-season and has forced his way into Klopp’s thinking.
Liverpool signed Elliott from Fulham two years ago and he spent last season on loan at Blackburn Rovers.
An excellent campaign in the Championship was expected to be followed by another temporary spell this term, but Klopp now wants him in his senior side.

The youngster made the most of several senior stars being granted extended summer breaks by performing well in pre-season and now seems set to be offered regular Premier League minutes.
Goals by Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane helped the Reds defeat Burnley 2-0 on Saturday, with Elliott contributing to the success with a fine display.
Another academy talent expected to step up is 16-year-old sensation Gordon.
The winger was signed from Derby County in January. He had already made his first-team debut for the Rams under Wayne Rooney.
Gordon does not turn 17 until October but has flourished at under-18 level and stepped up to the club’s under-23 squad at the end of last season.
Klopp used him in his senior squad in pre-season and he clearly impressed enough to be considered for competitive action.
The German head coach was delighted by Elliott’s performance against Burnley. The midfielder was heavily involved in the move which led to Trent Alexander-Arnold assisting Mane’s goal midway through the second half.
Klopp now seems ready to present opportunities to his young players this term.
“Harvey was part of this performance,” he said of Elliott after defeating the Clarets on Saturday.
“Everybody wants to speak to me about Harvey and I understand absolutely when an 18-year-old plays such a mature game why everybody is asking, but I was not surprised he played like this.
“That’s exactly how he trained in the six or seven weeks he has been back with us from loan. It was good.”
