Liverpool fans were clearly emotional at seeing Virgil van Dijk return to the pitch after almost a year out with injury. Van Dijk and Joe Gomez returned to the squad for Thursday night’s friendly against Hertha Berlin.

Liverpool fans have been made to wait to see Van Dijk and Gomez back out on the pitch.

The two centre-backs have completed their rehab from devastating knee injuries, and have finally returned to action.

Van Dijk has been out since October with a ruptured ACL in his right knee.

And to make matters worse for the defending Premier League champions at the time, Gomez went away with England weeks later and suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Jurgen Klopp was forced to make do until the January transfer window, when Ozan Kabak joined on a short-term loan from Schalke.

This summer, Ibrahima Konate joined from RB Leipzig and has already made a positive impression.

He started against Hertha, and is expected to partner Van Dijk at the heart of defence next season.

But for Liverpool fans, Thursday was just about seeing the two in action rather than making any tactical observations or predictions for the new season.

Liverpool confirmed prior to the match that Van Dijk and Gomez would both feature in the squad, with fans desperate to see them out on the pitch.

One fan wrote: “Things you absolutely love to see.”

Van Dijk and Gomez both made their way onto the pitch when Liverpool were 3-2 down to Hertha in the second half.

But that didn’t dampen the spirits of Reds fans, with one writing: “THE KING IS BACKKKK”.

One joked: “Siri, play “the boys are back in town” by Thin Lizzy”
