Liverpool transfer target Joao Gomes has told the Reds that he wants to complete a move to Anfield and ‘dreams’ of playing in the Champions League. Several reports suggest that the Reds have been scouting Gomes ahead of a possible pursuit.

The Flamengo midfielder has earned a reputation as one of the brightest talents in South America. Liverpool are one of several clubs who have been linked with the 21-year-old.

Gomes has now revealed that the Merseysiders are a team he would like to join and opened up on his desire to play in the Champions League. He has given the Premier League club the green-light to begin negotiations.

The Brazil U20 international was asked about Liverpool’s interest by ESPN after Flamengo were beaten 2-1 by Fluminense on Sunday, in a game that featured five red cards. He said: “Liverpool are a team I’d play for. I have the greatest desire to play. Playing in the Champions League is my biggest dream in football.”

Liverpool identified Gomes as a possible midfield signing this summer, with wide-ranging reports suggesting that they have extensively scouted the player. Manchester United have also been linked, but prising the starlet away from Flamengo would have proved difficult.

Jurgen Klopp was desperate to sign a midfielder in the final days of the summer transfer window having seen his squad stretched by the packed fixture schedule. The likes of Fabinho, Thiago Alcantara, Jordan Henderson, Curtis Jones and Fabio Carvalho have already spent spells on the sidelines due to injury.

A loan deal for Juventus ace Arthur Melo was sealed on transfer deadline day, but the Brazilian is yet to feature prominently for the Reds. The 26-year-old started Saturday’s PL2 fixture against Leicester, but has made just one substitute appearance for the first team.

Jurgen Klopp’s verdict on Arthur as Liverpool ‘consider ending loan’

Italian publication Tuttomercato claim that Liverpool are already considering prematurely ending Arthur’s loan. The midfielder is apparently nowhere near the fitness levels required to play regularly for his new club.

Klopp said of Arthur earlier this month: “Arthur needs now just football – and training, especially, that’s how it is. He wasn’t in team training for a while at Juve, so he needs proper team training – and that’s what we are doing with him.

“Can he play minutes? Yes. Should he play a full game? No, because he needs to get used to the intensity in each competition.

“It’s not like in the Champions League you have to work less than in the Premier League. Not at all, especially not here. He is doing well, he is really giving his absolute all in training, we have to be careful with him as well and then we will see whether we can use him.”
