Liverpool transfer news: Celtic ‘gutted’ Ben Davies is joining Reds on deadline day

Liverpool: Klopp hails Salah after win at West Ham

Liverpool have hijacked Celtic’s move for Preston star Ben Davies, who is set to officially complete a move to Anfield on transfer deadline day. And reports claim the Hoops are ‘gutted’ they’re missing out on the 25-year-old. Jurgen Klopp is hopeful the Championship star can shine on Merseyside with the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez ruled out for the long term.

Liverpool have been hit by a defensive crisis this term.

Both Van Dijk and Gomez are crocked for the long-term, while the likes of Fabinho and Joel Matip have recently become sidelined as well.

That’s why they’re now preparing to welcome Davies to Anfield, with Klopp hopeful he can help the club retain the Premier League title they won so emphatically last term.

And The Athletic say Celtic are ‘gutted’ they’re missing out on the 25-year-old.

The Hoops had reportedly agreed to sign the defender in the summer and were keen to rush the move forward.

However, they’re now set to miss out with Liverpool hopeful of welcoming Davies to the club on deadline day – with a medical pencilled in.

Bournemouth were also reportedly in the mix to sign the Preston star but, once he learned of interest from Klopp, his mind was made up.

Liverpool used data analysis and scouting reports before swooping, and Klopp is also happy with the fact he’s homegrown.

And whether he can handle life in the Premier League, at the home of the current champions, is something only time will tell.

Klopp was tight-lipped when quizzed on Davies after his side’s 3-1 victory over West Ham on Sunday, saying: “I say it all the time, in our situation it makes sense [to sign a centre-back].

“[But] Nat Phillips played a decent game, James Milner shouted at Hendo ‘you better be careful, because if you keep playing like this, you’ll be centre-back for the rest of your career’.

“Our eyes are always open, and we try to fix our situation. If we can do it, I don’t know. If not, we play like tonight.

“If it’s not a problem, it’s only a problem if something else happens – then we become a little bit short, that’s true.”

Davies may not be Liverpool’s only arrival on deadline day.

Klopp is also hoping the Reds can sign Duje Caleta-Car from Marseille, with the centre-back eager to move to England.

He reportedly spent Sunday waiting by a private jet with his girlfriend, hoping to get the green light to complete a transfer.

But he was left disappointed when Marseille halted talks, with the Ligue 1 giants eager to sign a replacement before sanctioning a departure.

Meanwhile, Klopp hailed his Liverpool players after their 3-1 win over West Ham – admitting they’d talked about issues in the squad as a team prior to the contest.

“We spoke a lot in the last few weeks, as you can imagine,” he said.

“These boys are a really good group. They are not happy with not being successful.

“They always have the right attitude. But they need the right information as well. Now we have a found a way again to be uncomfortable for other teams.”

The Liverpool boss also challenged his side to keep winning, saying: “[Manchester] City were struggling in the beginning, then we were struggling three or four games ago.

“Now we need to keep winning if we want to win the league. It’s been a really big week.”
