Liverpool could be boosted by the return of key men Alisson Becker and Thiago Alcantara for the visit of Sheffield United on Saturday night.

Goalkeeper Alisson has been missing for nearly four weeks with a shoulder injury picked up in training, while Thiago missed the Champions League win over Ajax due to a knee injury picked up from Richarlison’s red card challenge in the Merseyside Derby.

Reds manager Jurgen Klopp refused to rule out the pair’s availability for the Anfield match this weekend, with Joel Matip also facing a late fitness test in the next 24 hours.

Asked in his pre-match whether the trio will be fit for the match against the Blades, Klopp said: ‘I don’t know. We have training after the press conference, so we will see who is out there. You can only be in contention if you are in training.

‘Look, in my situation, I don’t want to rule anybody out until someone tells me and so far, nobody told me. Maybe I should have listened better!’

Three players who will definitely miss the match are Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, summer signing Kostas Tsimikas and Virgil van Dijk, with the latter facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines following an anterior cruciate ligament injury in the Everton match.

The Dutch defender was on the end of a reckless challenge by Toffees goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and had to be withdrawn from the Goodison Park match after just six minutes.

Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti revealed that Pickford is very sorry for the incident, while Klopp claimed he does not know how long his star defender will be out for.

The German boss continued: ‘I can understand people are interested in Virgil. He is OK, it doesn’t make sense we give a schedule every day. Surgery will happen at the appropriate time.

‘We don’t even want to know to be honest. Recovery will take time that is clear. All people are different. It won’t make sense to say (when he’s back). Everyone copes differently so there is no need for it.’

Liverpool take on Sheffield United looking to get back to winning ways after the 2-2 derby draw last weekend.

Last weekend’s point took the reigning Premier League champions to third-place in the table, three points behind leaders and Merseyside rivals Everton.
