Luke Shaw sends message to Man Utd team-mate Alex Telles over competition

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has sent a message to team-mate Alex Telles over competition for the left-back position.

The Englishman has started all four of the Red Devils’ last games as they have gone unbeaten since the 6-1 defeat to Tottenham earlier this month.

But he has a new contender for his place at left-back in Telles, who arrived from Porto over the summer in a five-year deal.

With nearly 200 appearances for the Portuguese side that include Champions League experience, fans wanted to see the Brazilian put straight into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

While Covid-19 has kept Telles out, Shaw, who suffered a tibia fracture in 2015 that kept him out all season, has sent a message saying he is ready to compete.

Speaking to Stadium Astro , the fellow full-back said: “When you get injuries like that, you do your time when you’re out.

“Sometimes it’s hard but you’ve got to forget about what happened in the past and focus on now.

“Now, it’s pushing me even more with the competition we have and the players the manager has brought in.

“With consistency and staying fit, sometimes in the past I’ve struggled to play a lot of games.

“Now, I’ve played more or less every game this season, so hopefully I can stay fit and keep helping the team out as much as I can.”

Telles was one of four players to arrive at Old Trafford over the summer as he joined Donny van de Beek, Edinson Cavani and Fecund Pellistri at the club while Amad Traore will join in January.

And Shaw went on to praise the manager for giving United more squad depth.

“The squad looks even stronger than last season,” the full-back added.

“I think it definitely helps having a strong depth of squad, especially for the game on Wednesday.

“You look at what the manager had to bring on and I don’t think we’ve had that for many years.

“I wouldn’t say our bench has been weak. We’ve had wonderful players, but the strength of the squad now is amazing.

“There’s a lot of teams with good squads but we’ve got one that is still very young and has a chance to improve a lot.”

United will hope to make it five games unbeaten with a win against Arsenal – and Daily Star Sport have taken a look at how they could line up with Shaw in the squad.
