Arsenal were looking to offload Alexandre Lacazette this summer and Manchester City have been urged to move for the Frenchman by their former player Shaun Wright-Philips. Pep Guardiola’s side are in desperate need of a new striker after failing to replace Sergio Aguero last season.
Gabriel Jesus is the only senior forward at the club and City have often played midfielder Ferran Torres up front this term.
But to solve their problem area in the short-term, Wright-Philips has recommended the Blues raid Arsenal.
“Someone was talking to me about it the other day and I said ‘for me I would sign Ollie Watkins. Or even Lacazette, he knows where the goal is,” Wright-Phillips told The Sun.
“He knows how to bring people into play and I always believe that when he plays for Arsenal, their front three behind him seem to play better, there seems to be more of a link-up between them.”
With Guardiola and Arteta being close allies from their time spent coaching together, Express Sport takes a look at three potential ways they can scratch each other’s back with a swap deal.
Nathan Ake has struggled to break into City’s starting XI since joining from Bournemouth last year.
The centre-back was expected to get more minutes this campaign but the resurgence of John Stones has pushed him further down the pecking order.
Ake has proven that he can be a valuable asset in the Premier League from his time with Bournemouth.
And he could be a decent utility option for Arsenal should they want to freshen up the squad.
City pushed hard to sell Silva this summer but the Portugal international was not keen on moving on.
He decided to fight for his future and has been one of the Blues’ best players in the opening 11 games of the season.
However, Guardiola’s long-term plan may still not include the creative midfielder and Arteta has long been an admirer.
Arteta worked with Silva during his time on City’s backroom staff and would welcome the opportunity to like up again.
Raheem Sterling is struggling to break into the starting XI after being displaced by Phil Foden towards the end of last season.
There has been talk of City being open to letting the England international move on, especially since Jack Grealish’s arrival.
Barcelona boss Xavi is rumoured to be interested in taking the 26-year-old to the Nou Camp.
But Arteta could try and sign Sterling as part of a deal for Lacazette.
