Manchester City are expected to complete the £50m signing of Ruben Dias from Benfica in the next 48 hours.
Pep Guardiola has turned to the Portugal international after conceding defeat in his attempt to land No.1 target Kalibou Koulibaly from Napoli.
The Italian club have held out for £80m for Koulibaly, leaving Guardiola with no choice but to target Dias instead after Etihad bosses refused to meet Napoli's valuation.
Dias, 23, was made captain of Benfica for last weekend's 2-0 win over Moreirense and afterwards his boss Jorge Jesus admitted it had probably been his last game for the club.
Etihad chiefs have held extensive talks with Dias and agreed personal terms with the centre back on a five-year deal.
He is expected to travel to Manchester and undergo a medical before becoming Guardiola's second summer signing after Ferran Torres.
Nicolas Otamendi, who was left out of Guardiola's squad for Sunday's visit of Leicester, is set to travel in the opposite direction and join Benfica.
