Manchester United drawing with Chelsea on Sunday proved they need to sign a striker, according to former Blues frontman Chris Sutton. United once again failed to score in a match against one of the Premier League big six. The Red Devils have scored just one goal against those sides in league matches this season.

That solitary goal came from the penalty spot in the 6-1 drubbing by Tottenham at Old Trafford.

Mason Greenwood started up top at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, with Anthony Martial named among the substitutes and Edinson Cavani absent through injury.

Sutton believes Cavani was a big miss on the day and could have provided that extra spark for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

However, at the age of 34, Sutton says Cavani cannot be relied upon and a new forward should be signed.

“I thought Manchester United missed Cavani,” Sutton told Stadium Astro.

“Whether it was off the bench or starting today, because albeit I think Mason Greenwood is a talented player, Anthony Martial has done well as a makeshift No 9 at times, but he’s not a natural, he doesn’t move like a proper No 9.

“And I think Cavani may have been the difference for United today and that’s an area which I think Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have to think about in terms of recruitment.

“Cavani is getting on a little bit now but is still fit and sharp enough at this moment in time.

“But they needed something a bit different today and maybe he was the player they lacked.”

Cavani posted an update on his injury return over the weekend, writing on social media: “Eager to come back soon.”

Following the draw in west London, Solskjaer admitted his team are not scoring enough goals.

“We’re not scoring enough goals, that’s for sure,” Solskjaer said in his post-match press conference.

“We came away and it’s another good clean sheet but the next step for this team is to win these games and score a goal.

“We needed to get three points and, of course, we should have had a penalty, which probably I would back Bruno [Fernandes] every day of the week.

“We didn’t have the right weight of pass, good quality at the end in the four or five good breakaways we had in the second half.”
