Man Utd face dilemma as two transfer targets for 2021 lay out terms for moves

Manchester United are facing a dilemma over next summer’s transfer strategy as two of their top targets had laid out terms in order for a move to happen.

The Red Devils have made a centre-back their priority for the 2021 window after shipping 11 goals in their first three Premier League games.

Captain Harry Maguire has suffered problems in the back line, with some believing he is on the “wrong side”.

But The Athletic have reported that they are already facing obstacles with two of their top targets in that position.

Dayot Upamecano, who is now into his fifth season with RB Leipzig, was a target for United over the summer.

But the Frenchman has since made it clear that he will only consider a move to Old Trafford if they are competing for the Champions League.

When a move failed to materialise, though, the Bundesliga side got him to sign a deal that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2023.

While his release clause is currently £54m, the figure is set to decrease next summer which could see the Red Devils swoop in.

Upamecano is on a shortlist of three players alongside Burnley’s James Tarkowski and Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly.

While another option for them could be Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane, who is into his 10th season at the Bernabeu.

The Frenchman is reportedly seeking out a new contract with the la Liga giants – but he would consider a Premier League move if it did not happen.

And a big term for the 27-year-old will be competing in the Champions League.

Maguire was brought in last season to bolster United’s defence, costing the Red Devils £80m from Leicester City.

But club legend Patrice Evra believes that the captain should be dropped from the starting XI after his performance in the 6-1 loss against Tottenham.

“I know you have to have some filter when you talk on TV but it is a shambles,” the former United ace said on Sky Sports after the 6-1 loss to Spurs.

“Gary Neville, I heard him say captain Harry Maguire needs a holiday. We always hear about pairing him with someone. But what about taking him out of the squad?”
