Manchester United have played eight matches so far this season. Erik ten Hag’s reign started badly with defeats to Brighton and Brentford but, while they’ve also lost to Real Sociedad since then, they’ve also claimed five victories as well. So Express Sport will now take a look at five players who have experienced difficult starts to the season, and who appear to be in trouble when it comes to battling their way into the Dutchman’s starting XI.

Harry Maguire

Back in the summer, Ten Hag gave Harry Maguire his backing and insisted the 29-year-old would remain captain of Manchester United.

However, just eight games into the Dutchman’s spell in the dugout, and the England international appears to be the odd one out.

Maguire was dreadful in the defeats to Brentford and Brighton, while also didn’t cover himself in glory during the recent 1-0 defeat to Sociedad at Old Trafford.

Right now, the former Leicester star is behind both Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane in Ten Hag’s pecking order.

While Maguire has made the England squad for upcoming matches against Italy and Germany, it’s clear he has a huge fight on his hands to get into the club’s starting XI once again.

Man Utd transfers: Two players stopped the club making more signings

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Ten Hag was actually open to cutting Aaron Wan-Bissaka loose in the summer, believing the former Crystal Palace star isn’t good enough for a club of United’s size and stature.

In the end, however, the Dutchman was forced to keep the 24-year-old after John Murtough implored him to give the right-back a chance.

Wan-Bissaka is yet to start for United so far this season, however, and will struggle to regain the right-back slot due to the impressive form of Diogo Dalot.

With Ten Hag hoping to sign a new right-back in January, it seems like the full-back’s time at the club is drawing to a close.

A return to London has been mooted, with Palace eyeing their old defender back when the transfer window was open.

Donny van de Beek

When it was confirmed Ten Hag would be United’s new boss earlier in the year, many expected that decision to benefit Donny van de Beek.

However, while he’s missed the last month or so due to injury, there’s no guarantee life in Manchester will improve for the Netherlands international.

United have found a winning formula in midfield, with Scott McTominay and Christian Eriksen flourishing alongside Bruno Fernandes.

Throw in the fact the Red Devils also have Casemiro at their disposal nowadays, Van de Beek is almost becoming a forgotten man.

He’s started just four Premier League appearances in three years and was benched for all three of Ten Hag’s first matches in the dugout, before injury struck.

Fred

Fred has started three matches for United so far this season.

And the club have failed to pick up a single point in all three of them.

The Brazil international is a useful player for United but, following the arrival of Casemiro, is now fifth-choice when it comes to Ten Hag’s preferred midfield.

His contract is due to expire next summer, though the Red Devils will trigger an extension to avoid losing him for nothing.

It seems like a big year for Fred as a result because, if he can’t become a regular in the starting XI, then it’s possible a parting of the ways will take place.

Martin Dubravka

Martin Dubravka only joined United on transfer deadline day, with the Slovakia international moving on loan from Newcastle.

But the former Toon star is yet to make a single appearance for the club.

Many have been expecting Dubravka to start in the Europa League, yet he was benched for the defeat to Sociedad and left out of the squad altogether for Thursday’s 2-0 win over Sheriff in Moldova.

Dubravka even seems to be below veteran Tom Heaton in Ten Hag’s pecking order.

So it’s hard to see him getting much game time under his belt in the coming weeks and months ahead, especially when he’s already out in the cold so soon after his arrival.]
