Manchester United, with just days of the transfer window to go, are ready to up the ante when it comes to Jadon Sancho. They’re poised to make a new bid to Borussia Dortmund as Ed Woodward looks to land Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s top attacking target. However, in waiting until the very last minute, the Red Devils have made the wrong decision.
For Solskjaer, Sancho is a vital piece of his United jigsaw.
The Red Devils manager has spent the last 18 months tracking the Dortmund star, who has established himself as one of the best attacking players on the planet throughout his time at the Westfalenstadion.
Solskjaer hoped for United to sign Sancho 12 months ago but, having missed out on Champions League qualification, had to settle for Daniel James instead.
This time around, the club have done their bit on the pitch.
Few gave Solskjaer’s side a chance of finishing in the Premier League top four when they were emphatically beaten by Liverpool at Anfield in January on a chastening afternoon on Merseyside.
But United bounced back, with Bruno Fernandes inspiring them to Champions League qualification with some sensational performances – with Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood shining too.
Premier League done deals: Every confirmed transfer in the summer window so far
Ever since beating Leicester 2-0 on the final day of last season, talk of them moving for Sancho has dominated the headlines.
But it’s now, with just days of the transfer window left, that United plan to make their move.
The Red Devils are planning one last swoop for the England international, with reports suggesting their bid will still fall short of Dortmund’s huge £108million asking price.
And with time running out, United stand little chance of bringing him through the door.
Even if they meet Dortmund’s asking price, the Bundesliga giants would have little time to bring in a replacement. What good is the money when you can’t use it until January, by which time the title could already be on it’s way to Bayern Munich?

United, in waiting so long, now risk missing out altogether.
And that will do nothing to boost the mood around Old Trafford, with the club already under pressure just two games into the new Premier League season.
United were abject as they lost 3-1 to Crystal Palace on the opening day of the campaign, putting in a torrid performance in front of an empty Old Trafford.
And they were lucky to scrape their way past Brighton on Saturday afternoon, with the hosts the better side – hitting the woodwork five times in total – as a late Fernandes penalty dug them out of a hole.
Sancho, with his dazzling talents, would provide both players and fans with a huge boost.

But United, by waiting until there’s less than a week left on the clock, have made the wrong decision.
Now, alternatives could be heading to Old Trafford instead.
Ousmane Dembele remains admired at United, despite the Barcelona star struggling with form and injuries ever since his move to the Nou Camp back in the summer transfer window of 2017.
Ivan Perisic is back on their radar, with the Croatia international surplus to requirements at Inter Milan despite shining for Bayern Munich last term.
And Douglas Costa is another potential new recruit, too, despite managing to find the net just three times for Juventus across all competitions last season.
