Manchester United are reportedly leading the race to sign Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland this summer. But they will have to fend off competition from Premier League rivals Manchester City and Chelsea, as well as Spanish giants Real Madrid to secure the forward.

Haaland has been one of Europe’s deadliest strikers since joining Dortmund from Austrian side Salzburg in January 2020.

The Norwegian striker is currently the third highest scorer in the Bundesliga having scored 17 goals in the German top flight.

His remarkable record in all competitions means he’s stunningly scored as many goals as he has played games.

That has attracted the attention of many of European football’s top sides, with Haaland undoubtedly a generational talent.

And reports in Spain have today named Manchester United as the leading club in the race to sign Haaland, with Dortmund resigned to seeing him leave in the summer transfer window.

AS claim that the Red Devils are in pole position for Haaland when the window opens on 9 June.

It appears that the presence of Haaland’s fellow Norwegian Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could be used as one of United’s biggest bargaining chips.

The Spanish news organisation report that United will seek to ‘enforce in their favour’ the fact that one of Haaland’s idols is their boss.

It is not all good news for United though with rivals Manchester City providing fierce competition for Haaland’s signature.

City are set to be in the market for a star striker, with record goalscorer Sergio Aguero set to depart at the end of his contract in June.

And AS claim that the fact that they have the ‘economic potential’ to tempt Haaland to become a member of the blue half of Manchester.

The final Premier League club said to be a realistic landing spot is Chelsea, but the report states that Haaland does not see the Blues as a viable option after they signed Timo Werner last summer.

United and City’s main rivals for Haaland from the continental Europe are Real Madrid, with AS reporting that Haaland is one of Los Blancos’ top targets for the summer.

Though Kylian Mbappe is Madrid’s main option, they will turn to Haaland if a deal with PSG for Mbappe cannot be agreed.

AS claim that the relations between Madrid and Dortmund are good, giving the Spanish side hope that they can beat out United and City for Haaland.

With Dortmund’s financial structure built on selling their top players, it appears almost certain that either Haaland or Jadon Sancho will leave this summer.
