Villarreal are willing to accept a cut-price bid in order to facilitate a move for Manchester United target Pau Torres. The centre back has become one of the most consistent defenders in La Liga and broken into the Spain national team.

The 24-year-old is believed to be open to leaving the Spaniards as he looks to take the next step in his fledgling career.

It is believed Torres has a £56million release clause in his contract, which has been putting off some potential suitors.

However, according to ESPN via Metro Sport, Villarreal are ready to accept a bid in the region of £43m in order to fulfill his wishes.

United, along with Real Madrid are both believed to be tracking the centre-back, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer keen to add defensive reinforcements.

It has been suggested that Solskjaer will prioritise a move for a left-footed defender to partner Harry Maguire and Torres fits the bill perfectly.

The Manchester Evening News report that the player himself is keen on a move to Old Trafford, although there is reported interest from local rivals Manchester City.

Real had previously believed they were in pole position for Torres’ signature, after earmarking him as the heir apparent to Sergio Ramos.

But after United entered the race, Florentino Perez was left fuming, with a feeling the player had been stolen from under their noses.

Torres isn’t the only defender believed to be on Solskjaer’s radar, as they look to find a more balanced partnership.

Along with the Villarreal star; Brighton’s Ben White, Raphael Varane from Real Madrid, Sevilla’s Jules Kounde and in-demand RB Leipzig star Ibrahima Konate have all been linked.

Speaking earlier this month, the United boss promised to remain tight-lipped on any potential transfer targets, hoping to conduct business behind closed doors.

“With the way the world works, at the moment, you’d like to do all our business, of course, on the quiet and all your talks on the quiet,” he said.

“Hopefully, I’ll sit here with players nobody has written about and thought we were not going to go to.

“We conduct our recruitment business and scouting the players we are interested in, we do it the right way, I hope and feel.”

Although the Norwegian promises to be coy on specifics, he has admitted a clear plan is already in place for the first window since the new structure behind the scenes was implemented.

“Of course, we have a plan ahead,” he explained.  “A plan that we think is going to happen.

“Two months is a long time in football as well, things might change.

“There are obviously a couple of players that the future’s not decided yet. Some without contracts, some with contracts.

“We do have a certain picture of what the squad’s going to look like in August when we start.”
