Matthijs de Ligt deal update
Manchester United would only have a chance of signing Matthijs de Ligt in the next transfer window if Juventus were desperate to raise funds, claims Italian football expert Gabriele Marcotti.
“This is one of those things where there isn’t much going on, sometimes these transfer stories take on a life of their own,” Marcotti told ESPN FC.
“The indication that we’ve had is that De Ligt was well settled at Juventus.
“Obviously he was on the bench early in the season, even after [Giorgio] Chiellini got hurt, Demiral was starting and then [Merih] Demiral got hurt.
“But over the past six weeks before the break De Ligt had been starting, he’d been playing really, really well and there was a sense that he’s still a very young player.
“So I would be slightly sceptical about it, also because he would cost an absolute mint given that Juventus paid a ton of money for him.
“Also, if United were so fixated on him surely they could have signed him last summer, when of course they didn’t. It just seems like an odd one at this time.
“There’s another obvious factor in this mix which I think might make United a little bit sceptical, which is of course the guy who looks after him is Mino Raiola who isn’t exactly super popular at United of course.”
Saul Niguez bid ready
Man Utd eyeing £70m midfielder
Manchester United chief Ed Woodward is ready to make a raid for Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez this summer. The Red Devils are anticipating they may need a replacement for Paul Pogba.
Saul, 25, has impressed for Atletico this season, helping them knock Liverpool out of the Champions League before the coronavirus pandemic stopped all football.
The playmaker has a massive £131million release clause but Spanish outlet AS claim Woodward is only willing to offer around £70m for his services.
Saul is currently in talks with Atletico over a new contract despite the COVID-19 crisis.
Transfer plans change
Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has called off the club’s search for a new left-back after the performances of Brandon Williams this season, in a move that the Red Devils hope will save them £50million.
Williams has been a key find for United this season after Solskjaer gave the 19-year-old a run in the first-team.
The teenager has made 26 first-team appearances for United in his breakout season for the club.
According to The Sun, United had considered sending out Williams on loan, as they looked for another left-back to challenge Luke Shaw, but their stance has now changed.
Williams held talks with Solskjaer in the past few weeks over his future and plans for next season.
