Man Utd now have two undroppable players in addition to Bruno Fernandes

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is edging closer to figuring out his best possible side and as it stands, it does not include Paul Pogba. With competition for places at Old Trafford more fierce than ever before, the United boss is having to make some tough decisions in the hot-seat.

Pogba and fellow midfielder Donny van de Beek have struggled for starts in recent weeks but both were given a run out in the 5-0 win over Leipzig.

It was a ruthless performance from United, most notably in the second half, as Solskjaer flaunted his tactical prowess for the second Champions League match in a row.

He started off with a 4-3-3 formation, which became a narrow diamond midfield in the second half (4-1-2-1-2).

The tweak saw United take things to the next level as they blew Leipzig away in the final half an hour of the contest.

It was one of United’s best ever performances under Solskjaer and the tactical tweak saw two of his players establish themselves as undroppables in his side at the moment.

Bruno Fernandes remains an immovable object in United’s midfield but he is now closely followed by Fred.

Not many would have predicted that a year or two ago, following his slow adaptation to English football after his £52million move from Shakhtar Donetsk.

Now he is bossing the engine room and has been reinvented in a holding role which requires more discipline than his previous position as a box-to-box player.

Man Utd boss Solskjaer snubbed Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes with touchline demand

Fred has made his mark in the side and is now keeping the likes of Pogba and Van de Beek at bay.

The rest have been left to fight for the final spot in midfield but while United are winning, there can be no complaints from those who miss out.

Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford’s importance to this side was there for all to see against Leipzig as he came off the bench to hit a memorable hat-trick.

With Edinson Cavani itching for a start, Rashford and Anthony Martial will have to stay at the top of their game to keep their place.

Now Rashford will be going nowhere given that he is a man full of confidence to go alongside his status as a national hero.

United are slowly building a new core which has been born from the arrival of Fernandes from Sporting in January.

The likes of Harry Maguire and Pogba were part of this team’s spine a year ago but now their places are under threat.

The same could be said for David de Gea, who has Dean Henderson waiting in the wings for a chance to shine.

Solskjaer is set to show loyalty towards those who continue to seize their opportunities and in Fernandes, Fred and Rashford, he has three undroppable players at his disposal.
