Manchester United could miss out on landing River Plate sensation Julian Alvarez after the striker’s agent reportedly jetted out to Italy to discuss a move to Serie A. The striker has been in scintillating form in Argentina this season.

Alvarez has been thrust into the spotlight in recent months after racking up an incredible 18 goals in 21 games this season in the Argentine Primera Division. He has also provided nine assists.

That output has helped his team storm to the top of the table courtesy of 16 wins from 25 matches. And now the teams in Europe are circling.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the player’s agent has been in Italy to discuss a transfer to either Inter Milan or their city rivals AC Milan.

Fiorentina are also reportedly interested in the player, with the future of their star striker Dusan Vlahovic up in the air amid interest from a string of top European sides.

Alvarez could also attract attention from the Red Devils and Atletico Madrid, with his contract in Argentina set to come to an end in the final month of this year.

The 21-year-old was handed his Argentina debut last April as he came on as a substitute for Angel Di Maria during his country’s World Cup qualifying draw with Chile.

He has since made a further four appearances, including during the Copa America against Bolivia.

Alvarez was voted as the best player in South America during 2021 and appears to have a big future at the top of the game.

He has a clause in his contract which would allow him to depart River Plate for less than £17million – so clubs could face a battle for his signature.

Alverez’s returns could bring attention from a string of clubs in the Premier League.

The Red Devils lead the charge in England as things stand, with the club being heavily linked for a move for the striker.

Alvarez has years ahead of him and could become one of the best strikers in the world in the future.

And his value would skyrocket if he did move to the Premier League.

United could be set to lose Edinson Cavani this month, with the Uruguay international tipped to join Barcelona.

The future of Cristiano Ronaldo is also an unknown, with some reports suggesting he could leave Old Trafford in the summer.

Anthony Martial is also set to leave, underlining the need for United’s necessity to sign a striker.

Alvarez is said to be their top target, though a number of other forwards are also on their radar, including the likes of Robert Lewandowski.
