Manchester United star Raphael Varane has explained how he plans to use his experience playing alongside Sergio Ramos to strike a partnership with Harry Maguire. Varane was signed by the Red Devils over the summer to become Maguire’s long-term partner at the heart of their defence.

The move solved one of the biggest problems with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad, with the other centre-back options lacking the required quality.

Varane has had an immediate impact on United’s performance at the back, having started two top-flight matches so far.

His debut came in the trip to Wolves, which saw United run out narrow winners as they secured a clean sheet.

The Frenchman impressed again when Newcastle visited Old Trafford, with the Magpies hammered as the hosts conceded only one goal.

While Varane was on the pitch for both of the Young Boys goals in the Champions League, it has been a solid start to life at his new club.

The 28-year-old will hope to return to the starting line-up when United visit West Ham on Sunday as they look to maintain their unbeaten start to the season.

Despite more than earning that recall after his excellent first two starts, Varane believes there is still work to be done to improve his relationship with United’s fellow defenders.

He also hailed Red Devils skipper Maguire and stated that he is confident for the future of United’s backline.

“Yeah I think he [Harry] is a great player,” Varane told Premier League Productions.

“I think we have to work hard to feel comfortable on the pitch. Every defender in this team, we have to feel connected on the pitch and we will be better together.

“We have to move together, we have to be motivated together. We have to be moving with one another so that’s an important connection and we have to feel comfortable on the pitch.”

Varane was previously part of a fearsome defensive partnership during his time at Madrid, where he featured alongside Sergio Ramos.

And the Frenchman believes he can use his experience from his Ramos partnership to improve his play with Maguire.

He did caution though that the Ramos partnership was developed over the course of a decade, insisting that he will also need time at United.

“With Sergio Ramos I had 10 years to know him and how he moved and how I have to move to be complementary with him,” Varane added.

“Every day we learn and every day we will do better and improve.”

United currently lie third in the Premier League table, but can move top if they secure a win by three or more goals at the London Stadium.
