Manchester United have been urged not to become too reliant on superstar Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of their crunch clash with Manchester City on Saturday. The Portuguese once again came to the rescue against Atalanta in midweek with a two-goal display, including a superb volley in stoppage time.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s renaissance of sorts continued in Italy as Ronaldo’s late equaliser averted another humiliating loss, this time against Atalanta.

The 36-year-old was also on hand for the reverse fixture, heading in to complete a 3-2 comeback with just 10 minutes to play.

Ronaldo’s goals have been flowing since a dramatic return from Juventus, with nine scored in all competitions already this season.

However, United will need a big performance from their whole team to get a result against City on Saturday, or at least to avoid the humbling they received from rivals Liverpool in October.

Dimitar Berbatov, who won two Premier League titles and a Golden Boot with the Red Devils, fired a warning to his former side on that basis.

“I’m looking forward to seeing Cristiano Ronaldo play a Manchester derby again,” the Bulgarian told Betfair.

“Everybody knows that when the team needs him in a difficult situation, like against Atalanta both times, he can pop up and score a vital goal. But, if United rely on him and think that his magic will happen every game then it is a big mistake.

“Football is a team sport and everybody should communicate, cover themselves and be on their game from the first minute.

“You can tell that Solskjaer is listening to what Ronaldo is saying after the games. But they can’t rely on him in every game.

“At the moment, Ronaldo, with his goals, is making life more comfortable for everybody at United.

“It may be too much to say Ronaldo has saved Solskjaer’s job, but you can tell that Ole is grateful to him.”

At present, Ronaldo has more than double his nearest challenger in United’s squad when it comes to goals scored in all competitions.

Furthermore, he has found a healthy knack of scoring when it matters most, particularly in the Champions League.

That will undoubtedly come as a worry for Man City and Pep Guardiola if United are within touching distance as Saturday’s encounter creeps towards stoppage time.

Solskjaer has a favourable head-to-head record over his Catalan counterpart, so Saturday could be the platform he needs to shrug off any lingering doubts about his capability to lead his side into a title charge.
