Manchester United have been warned that Donny van de Beek could end up like Everton flop Davy Klaasen.
The warning comes from someone who knows a thing or two about Dutch football – former AC Milan star and European Championship winner Ruud Gullit.
Van de Beek switched to United from Ajax last month in a £40m deal – became the latest in a series of Dutch recruits at Old Trafford including Jaap Stam, Robin van Persie and Ruud van Nistelrooy.
While those three were successes for the Red Devils, Holland star Memphis Depay didn't quite hit the heights during his spell with United – although he has since starred for Lyon and is wanted by Ronald Koeman at Barcelona.
But it's the example of Klaasen that Gullit is worried about – because he and Van de Beek share a similar style of play.
The midfielder made just 16 appearances for Everton and managed one assist after ditching the Ajax captaincy to head to Goodison for £24m in 2017.
A year later he was sold to Werder Bremen for half what the Blues had paid for him.
However, Gullit is crossing his fingers that Van de Beek won't flop – as he believes United have the attacking players who will help the 23-year-old thrive.
“I look forward to seeing Donny van de Beek at Manchester United,” Gullit wrote in De Telegraaf.

“What immediately occurred to me is that he should be careful not to become a second Davy Klaassen. Van de Beek is a younger copy of Davy in terms of play.
“Klaassen chose Everton, but the game of those two comes into its own most in an offensive squad, and therefore it should be easier for Donny at United than it was for Klaassen at Everton.
“The latter was snowed under. United plays a game in which Donny can flourish, but at the same time, he remains dependent on his fellow players as attackers."
Gullit is also concerned about how Van de Beek will fit into United's team – as Bruno Fernandes currently has the Dutchman's favoured role nailed down.

He also warned that Van de Beek must learn from Depay's example and get used to being in the spotlight at one of the world's biggest clubs.
“And is he allowed to play at his favourite spot? Because it is now occupied by the Portuguese international Bruno Fernandes," Gullit said.
“Van de Beek will also have to get used to being under a magnifying glass every day. Depay can talk about that.”
