Manchester United appear to have the perfect partner in crime for Cristiano Ronaldo already at the club. The Red Devils announced their agreement to bring the Portuguese legend back to the club on Friday in a sensational move.

During his first spell at United, Ronaldo was never short of quality when it came to his team-mates – Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Wayne Rooney to name but a few.

Quality is a word that has become less prevalent at United in more recent years as the club transitioned into a side that struggled to qualify for the Europa League.

The Red Devils are back on the way up now, and the £115m outlay on Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane was perfectly topped by Ronaldo’s return.

But even before this summer’s signings, United had the perfect partner for Ronaldo and he has played with him countless times before.

Of course, that man is none other his Portugal team-mate Bruno Fernandes – who else?

The man who has arguably come the closest to emulating Ronaldo’s world-class talent since he left 12 years ago, Fernandes has been the spearhead for United’s rise back to Premier League title contenders.

And now he has the perfect striker to play ahead of him in Ronaldo.

Playing behind Anthony Martial was never going to be ideal for Fernandes, while he has made the best of an ageing situation with Edinson Cavani.

But Ronaldo is a different breed – even at 36 years of age.

As he showed by claiming the Golden Boot at Euro 2020, Ronaldo is maturing like a fine wine, and has certainly not lost his eye for goal, even if he has lost half a yard of pace.

Having Ronaldo in the team will take some of the pressure off Fernandes to deliver the goods every week, like he has done for more than 18 months now.

And Ronaldo’s arrival is sure to give Fernandes a huge boost, given he became a United fan after watching Ronaldo.

“My love of Manchester United really started when I used to watch Cristiano Ronaldo play and ever since then I have been a big fan of this great club,” said Fernandes after his move from Sporting Lisbon last January.
