Anthony Martial should not be sold by Manchester United unless he can be replaced with a bigger star, says the club's former striker Louis Saha.
The Frenchman joined United in 2015 in a record signing which made him the most expensive teenager in history but his performances have not always lived up to expectations.
This season Martial had scored seven goals in 45 appearances across all competitions before getting injured in April.
However, his form hasn't been all bad after he slotted in 23 goals in United's last campaign.
While the 25-year-old may not have shone as brightly as bosses would have hoped, former France international Saha believes Martial cannot just be pushed aside.
Saha told 888.com : "You can’t get rid of Anthony Martial without replacing him and Martial is a top player.
"So, to pick a player over Martial you have to look at [Kylian] Mbappe or [Erling] Haaland or someone like that, otherwise it makes no sense to let him go.
"Just because he is not very confident right now on the pitch you cannot just go for a player of the same level. You have to look for the big names because Martial is a great player."
Martial's place at the club is something former players disagree on, though, as ex- Arsenal star Ray Parlour told TalkSport United should sell the player.
Parlour said: "Sometimes he looks disinterested with football in general. If you’re going to be at the top of your game, you’ve got to make sure you’re consistent week in week out, put in performances week in week out. He doesn’t do that, for me.
"You aren’t going to win anything with a player like that in your team. So Manchester United will probably be looking to say, okay, how much money can we get for him?
"How can we move him on? Let’s bring someone else in and give them the opportunity to play for this club."
