Mikel Arteta was spotted brutally snubbing Granit Xhaka after the Arsenal midfielder suffered a sending off against Liverpool.

The Gunners got off to a poor start in their Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg at Anfield as the home side dominated possession and had a number of chances to go ahead early on.

But things went from bad to worse for Arteta's side as central-midfielder Xhaka was shown a straight red card in the 24th minute for a brainless challenge on Diogo Jota.

And the Spanish manager was left fuming as he snubbed the Swiss veteran, who hung his head in shame as he was given his marching orders by referee Michael Oliver.

Arteta stayed sitting down as the Switzerland captain approached the touchline, barely acknowledging the player who was once stripped of his Arsenal captaincy for his temper.

Xhaka's red came courtesy of a stereotypical rush of blood to the head following a long ball over the top by Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson.

Jota had beaten him for pace and looked clear through on goal, but rather than trusting his goalkeeper, Xhaka executed a hugely-mistimed scissor kick.

Match official Oliver wasted no time in brandishing a red card as the 29-year-old pleaded his innocence to no avail.

The sending off was Xhaka's sixth in his hugely divisive Arsenal career, following the red he picked up against Manchester City at the start of the season.

It will see him potentially miss four games for the Gunners, three due to serious foul play, and an additional match as it was his second of the season.

Arteta will be no doubt furious at one of his more experienced players, with the side already thread-bare in midfield due to Mohamed Elneny and Thomas Partey jetting off for Africa Cup of Nations duty.

Xhaka will also miss the north London derby visit to Tottenham this weekend.
