Mikel Arteta ready to sell his former Arsenal team-mate to boost summer transfer

Arsenal are prepared to sanction the departure of Calum Chambers amid interest from newly promoted Fulham.

The England international began last season in Unai Emery’s starting XI and was a regular fixture in the team during the early period of Mikel Arteta’s tenure.

Chambers suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury, however, during Arteta’s first home match at the helm against Chelsea which put paid to a promising individual campaign.

The Gunners have subsequently handed a new contract to David Luiz and turned Pablo Mari’s loan move from Flamengo into a permanent deal.

William Saliba, meanwhile, has returned from his loan spell at Saint-Etienne and Arsenal are also in the running to sign Lille’s Brazilian centre-half Gabriel.

Chambers was signed by Arsene Wenger from Southampton in the summer of 2015 in a £12million deal and played alongside Arteta for two seasons before the current Arsenal manager hung up his boots.

The 25-year-old has proved to be a versatile member of the squad but is likely to be deemed surplus to requirements.

Chambers spent the 2018/19 campaign on loan at Craven Cottage, during which he largely featured as a defensive midfielder, and, according to The Sun, Scott Parker is keen to bring the player back to west London.

Fulham’s promotion back to the Premier League after a one-season absence was confirmed last week following their play-off victory over Brentford at Wembley.

Parker is also said to be interested in signing Southampton midfielder Harrison Reed, while Ryan Sessegnon, who is also said to be interesting Ajax, could return on loan from Tottenham.
