Murphy agrees with Shearer in telling Liverpool fans to ‘get carried away’

Danny Murphy and Alan Shearer have told Liverpool fans to get ‘carried away’ after Curtis Jones’ goalscoring performance against Sheffield United.

Jones scored the Reds’ opener in Sunday evening’s game at the Premier League’s bottom side, as Jurgen Klopp’s men finally ended a run of four successive league defeats.

The young midfielder has been one of Liverpool’s few bright spots in recent weeks and found the back of the net in the second half with a powerful shot.

Though Roberto Firmino saw a shot deflected into his own net by Kean Bryan, Jones was player who caught Newcastle legend Shearer’s eye the most.

“When you look at the experience in the team, in midfield, it was the youngster that was the best player on the pitch, Curtis Jones – 20 starts he’s had this season, 20 years of age,” he said on Match of the Day 2.

“He showed a great maturity, a lot of his good work was being the furthest man forward, driving forwards.

“He shows great intelligence of the game. He finds himself in the space and the ball falls to him and he sticks it away. He starts the move for the second bit of goal and his weight of pass was fantastic.”

Though Jones lined up alongside Champions League winner Georginio Wijnaldum and Thiago Alcantara, it was the Liverpool academy product who starred.

And former Liverpool man Murphy agreed with his fellow pundit that Jones’ performance was just a sign of things to come.

“He certainly will bring that (goals), he wants to get forward but you can trust him defensively,” Murphy said.

“He’s a superstar in the making. I don’t like to get too carried away but you have to with this lad, he’s that good. He’s shown a great level of maturity. He was terrific today.”
