Newcastle United could be forced to shell out a mega-money fee in order to land Diego Carlos this month, with Sevilla determined to wait until they have received an acceptable offer for his services, according to reports. The Brazilian defender, who plays alongside long-term Chelsea target Jules Kounde for the La Liga heavyweights, is said to be keen on joining Newcastle on a permanent basis ahead of this month’s transfer deadline.
Newcastle are known to be in the market for a new central defender after conceding 43 goals in the Premier League since the beginning of the campaign.
They have been linked with a number of high-profile names in recent weeks but have finally settled on Carlos, who is widely expected to become their third signing of the January window.
Those in command at St James’ Park are believed to be keen on wrapping up a deal in time for Saturday’s match against Leeds United at Elland Road.
Carlos has reportedly agreed personal terms on a five-year contract and is looking forward to the prospect of linking up with Eddie Howe’s side ahead of the Premier League run-in.
However, it seems as though the proposed move remains in the balance as Sevilla look to squeeze every penny out of the big-spending Magpies.

They are demanding that an ‘important’ bid is made before allowing Carlos to leave and will be prepared to pull the plug if their requirements are not met, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Newcastle have already tabled an offer in the region of £29million but to no avail, with talks between the two clubs said to be ongoing behind closed doors.
Sevilla’s stance on Carlos appears to mirror their approach to the summer saga involving Chelsea and Kounde, who was eventually denied a big-money move to Stamford Bridge despite agreeing a long-term contract with the European champions.
The Frenchman was desperate to join the Blues but was prevented from doing so by Sevilla, who refused to sell for anything less than his release clause of £67.5m.
Chelsea were unwilling to match this figure and were ultimately forced into ending their interest in Kounde after months of negotiations.
It remains to be seen whether Sevilla will continue to stand firm over Carlos, who is said to be extremely keen on the idea of joining Newcastle this month.
Former Premier League goalkeeper Paddy Kenny recently tipped the Magpies to pay whatever is necessary in order to engineer the move as a result of their dire need for additional reinforcements at the back.
“There is no time for Newcastle to mess around,” Kenny told Football Insider when quizzed on their interest in Carlos.

“Look at where they are in the table, it’s really not looking good. But, Newcastle have the money. None of the other clubs around them have that.
“If things don’t improve then I’m sure they will get desperate and pay whatever Sevilla ask for, even if it is extortionate.
“The guy looks a quality defender and God knows Newcastle need quality defenders. They have one of the worst defences in the league and wins come from the back.
“You need to be able to keep clean sheets. Carlos will help them do that.”
