Newcastle United fans have fond memories of Hatem Ben Arfa strutting his stuff on the St. James' Park turf around a decade ago.
The Frenchman's five-year spell on Tyneside ended on a bum note, with Alan Pardew loaning the controversial star out to Hull in 2014.
Despite this, the joy Ben Arfa brought Newcastle supporters in the early days of his Premier League spell mean he is still revered in the north-east.
Since leaving the Magpies, the 33-year-old has played for four Ligue 1 sides, with a short stint at La Liga outfit Valladolid last year.
But now playing for Bordeaux, Ben Arfa has been accused of putting in a below-par performance against Marseille at the weekend – prompting an incredible rant from French pundit Daniel Riolo on RMC Sport – one which Newcastle fans may disagree with.
“They didn’t create a single opportunity because they have a muppet [Ben Arfa] who thinks of himself as an international star, who as soon as he gets the ball, doesn’t give it to anyone, wants to dribble three players and shoots in the stands. It’s a shame!" Riolo said.
"And the guy doesn’t even run. Did you see him on the pitch, his attitude? He’s not running…
“We’ve been p****** about for 15 years with this guy in French football, and you still have people who are saying ‘yeah, he’s a great player, he’s a real genius’. And our fellow journalists have been saying the same for 15 years.
“Just shut your mouths, you all suck. You don’t understand anything about football. It drives me crazy that this guy has been considered a genius for fifteen years. But when?
"A genius is Messi! Besides an idiot, there is no one who can say that he is a genius.
“They can put me on trial in the world, the guy who tells me that Ben Arfa is a genius is an idiot, a guy who does not understand anything about football.”
Ben Arfa featured 72 times for Newcastle, dazzling with his silky footwork.
