Ole Gunnar Solskajer made ‘huge substitute error’ in Man Utd’s defeat to Arsenal

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made an “error” in his choice of substitutions for Manchester United, says Rene Meulensteen.

The Red Devils were beaten 1-0 at home by Arsenal, ending their 14-year unbeaten run at Old Trafford against the Gunners.

Paul Pogba’s clip on Hector Bellerin after 58 minutes led to the penalty that gave Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang the winner.

The Frenchman stayed on the pitch for the full 90 minutes, though, as Bruno Fernandes made way alongside Fred and Mason Greenwood.

But Meulensteen, who spent seven years as a first-team coach under Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford, believes Solskjaer made the wrong decisions.

Speaking to Stadium Astro , the Dutchman said: “It is such a non Manchester United performance.

“It’s not what we like to see – lack-lustre, slow, laboured.

“It did surprise me that he took Fernandes off.

“He took [Mason] Greenwood off, made a like-for-like change with [Nemanja] Matic, and [Edinson] Cavani came on who needs box service.

“At the time, when they came off, it became even slower. The players needed even more touches.

“Arsenal were well set up, they defended well and blocked when they had to.

The former United coach went on to suggest what he would have done in Solskjaer’s shoes.

“I would have taken Pogba and [Scott] McTominay off,” Meulensteen added.

“I would have kept the front three on with [Marcus] Rashford on his preferred left side, Cavani up front.

“Fernandes and [Donny] van de Beek would have been together, opening holes sitting in front of Matic controlling.

“They were chasing a goal.

“You can then work with [Aaron] Wan-Bissaka and [Luke] Shaw pushing on. You want to drag people out, create an extra man and put quality balls in.

“You want to get the balls for Cavani in the right areas – and that didn’t happen.

“They reverted to long balls from the back. It was too slow and laboured. I couldn’t see them scoring at all.”

Solskjaer’s tactics have also been criticised by Andy Gray, suggesting Fernandes will be “really upset” by the substitution.
