Ole Gunnar Solskjaer responds to Van de Beek’s agent over Man Utd criticism

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists Donny van de Beek will be given plenty of playing time at Manchester United – after his agent hit out at the club.

Speaking before the win over Brighton on Wednesday night, Sjaak Swart criticised the midfielder's bit-part role for the Premier League giants.

Van de Beek arrived from Ajax this summer for a deal worth £40million but Solskjaer has opted against throwing him in at the deep end.

The boss has started the Dutchman on the bench for the opening two Premier League games, instead handing him starts in both Carabao Cup wins including the win at the Amex.

That reluctance to play the summer signing led to a furious outburst from the player's agent – but Solskjaer says Van de Beek will get his chance.

"We know how many games we're going to play and he's going to be vital," said Solskjaer following the 3-0 win over Brighton.

"He's proved in every game he's been a part of that he's got high quality, he's such a clever mover, he plays the game simply but effectively, with high quality. He's knocking on the door."

The boss was responding after Swart spoke out following United's narrow 3-2 Premier League win at Brighton on Saturday.

He told Voetbal Primeur : “A substitute, I don’t like it at all.

“I couldn’t do it myself, substituting in with four minutes left to play. Then you’d better let me sit down.

“I have to say: he did three more good things. The penalty, where the winning goal came from, came from him.

“But normally they should have lost 1-7. Five times post and bar, Brighton… They have a nice team, but that shouldn’t happen to Manchester United.”

Van de Beek proved his worth on Wednesday night, playing a part in Juan Mata's goal as United reached the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.
