Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Man Utd promise broken after embarrassing Young Boys loss

Manchester United suffered a late 2-1 defeat in their opening Champions League outing away at Young Boys – meaning Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already failed to keep one of his promises this season.

The Red Devils initially took the lead out in Switzerland, with returning hero Cristiano Ronaldo breaking the deadlock after 13 minutes.

However, 10 minutes before half-time Aaron Wan-Bissaka was brandished a straight red card for a dangerous challenge on Young Boys' Christopher Martins, a moment which proved costly.

Because the hosts went on to complete a stunning turnaround in the second half, first drawing level through Moumi Ngamaleu after 66 minutes.

And with the very last kick of the game, Theoson Siebatcheu latched onto a poor back-pass from Jesse Lingard and rounded David de Gea before stroking the winner home deep into stoppage time.

It was a devastating end to the game for United, who were on the verge of holding out for a satisfying point with the odds stacked against them.

The loss also comes as an embarrassment for Solskjaer after he promised to avoid a similar shortcoming to last season's defeat away at Istanbul Basaksehir.

Before their clash with Young Boys, the Red Devils manager said: "That Başaksehir game, we're going to make sure that doesn't happen this season."

United failed to make it out of the Champions League group stages in the 2020/21 campaign, with their 2-1 defeat against minnows Basaksehir proving disastrous.

Demba Ba raced through from the halfway line unchallenged to give the hosts liftoff in the 13th minute of that contest, before Edin Visca doubled their lead 27 minutes later.
