Liverpool transfer target Ozan Kabak is “undergoing medical checks” at Schalke as the Premier League giants hunt for a centre-back on Deadline Day.
The Reds confirmed they would be looking into a new defender on the last day of the January transfer window amid their injury crisis and recent run of form.
And the Turkish centre-back, currently in a relegation battle with the Bundesliga side, has been a long-term target for Jurgen Klopp.
But Sky Sports in Germany have reported that the Reds have now made their move.
Kabak is "meeting medical staff" at Schalke in order to get his move to Liverpool through before the deadline.
The pressure is on, though, as the window closes at 5pm GMT in Germany – six hours before it does in England.
And that is why the medical is being performed in the country, allowing the Premier League side to sign if off before the window shuts.
The 20-year-old has been with the Bundesliga side for the last two seasons, arriving from Stuggart in 2019 after a move from Galatasaray the year before.
He enjoyed a strong campaign last year, making 28 appearances at the back and even grabbing three goals in the league.
After a red card in the second game of the season this year, Kabak has been a mainstay over the last 11 games for Schalke.
With eight losses from those games, though, it would be understandable for the 20-year-old to chase a move to Liverpool.
The Turkish international would likely be in line for a place in Klopp’s starting XI amid injuries to Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip this season.
Kabak is not the only defender the Reds are chasing, though, as Preston North End centre-back Ben Davies is reportedly in line for a move.
With a £2m deal in the pipeline, it saw the 25-year-old get forced to delete a Tweet having a dig at his potential new club.
