French football was plunged into more chaos again on Sunday night – and Dimitri Payet was at the heart of the drama.

The former West Ham star was targeted by Nice ultras in the stands as a bottle was hurled his way while he prepared to take a corner.

Marseille’s talisman took great offence and was caught on camera launching it back into the crowd.

Nice’s fans then stormed the pitch as stewards failed to stop them, leading to ugly scenes on the pitch.

The game was subsequently suspended, and one Nice supporter even tried to kick Payet.

Someone wearing an orange bib could also be seen throwing a punch at one of the pitch invaders.

In another clip, Marseille boss Jorge Sampaoli had to be restrained by members of his coaching staff.

Fans on Twitter were taken aback by the disgraceful scenes as the match descended into farce.

One supporter wrote: "Holy moly. No excuse for throwing bottles on the pitch…even less of an excuse for throwing it back."
