Phil Jones admits going through “hell and back” on painful road back from injury

Phil Jones has admitted he's been to hell and back during his road to recovery at Manchester United, but he 'sees the light at the end of the tunnel'.

Jones was once touted as a future England captain.

However, Jones last appearance in the Premier League came during the 19/20 season, and he only made two appearances all campaign.

The 29-year-old failed to attract any offers over the summer as the Red Devils tried to offload the centre-back.

Jones has struggled with injuries of late, but when speaking to Manchester United's podcast, he has revealed he is optimistic about the future.

“I’m feeling good at the minute,” he said during an upcoming episode of the official United club podcast.

“Obviously, I’ve been through hell and back over the last couple of years. I struggled with my knee a little bit and [there] came a point after lockdown where I thought enough was enough.

"Thankfully, I see the light at the end of the tunnel now, and I’ve been back training, played a few behind-closed-doors games and I’m feeling really good at the minute.

"It’s so good to be back out training with the lads and enjoying being a footballer again because for the last 15 months, it’s been all ‘daddy daycare’ and not much football.”

Jones has fallen down the pecking order at United, and with the arrival of Raphael Varane competition for places has heightened.

The Englishman is still under contract until 2023.
