Philippe Coutinho will prioritise the footballing project as he decides his next move this month, as it emerged Aston Villa are in talks to sign Barcelona star.

The 29-year-old has been offered to a number of Premier League clubs with Barcelona keen to lose his and other high salaries off their books so that they can register new £55million signing Ferran Torres.

Ambitious Villa have the added pull of having Coutinho’s former team-mate and captain Steven Gerrard as manager. That would be an obvious attraction for Coutinho who also has a degree of interest from Arsenal and Tottenham.

Coutinho has at least four alternative ‘top’ options and will consider all his options according to the attractiveness of the footballing project before he decides his next destination.

Sportsmail reported last week Coutinho has also been offered to Everton.

The former Liverpool midfielder moved to Barcelona in January 2018 for £146million.

However, the switch to Spain never worked out as Coutinho envisaged and he was loaned out to Bayern Munich in 2019 for a year before returning to Camp Nou.

Villa have been working to bring in three or four new additions with a midfielder, winger and left-back their priorities while a back-up centre-back is also required following Axel Tuanzebe’s departure for Napoli.

They have other options apart from Coutinho and are determined to bring in quality to bolster their push for European qualification.

The former Inter midfielder moved to Barcelona in January 2018 for £146 but has struggled

‘The important thing is we’ll only make signings if we feel they’re the right ones for the team and for the club to move us forward and to improve us,’ Gerrard said last weekend.

‘We won’t make them for the sake of it just to add volume. We are looking and assessing certain players for certain positions in the squad.’

Barcelona have been looking to offload a number of players with Coutinho, Samuel Umtiti and Sergino Dest among those made available.

Umtiti is under consideration at Newcastle United while Dest is one of the full-backs under consideration at Chelsea.

France international centre-back Umtiti has been pushed back onto Newcastle’s agenda after they had their opening £30m bid for Lille’s Sven Botman rejected.

They want two central defenders this month and admire Diego Carlos at Sevilla too but that deal will prove difficult as the Spanish side challenge Real Madrid for LaLiga title.
