Rangers fans split over Koeman links with manager available after Barcelona exit

Rangers fans have been left split over links tying recently-sacked Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman with the Scottish club.

Koeman was sacked in late October after struggling to guide a Barcelona side limited by its financial troubles and young squad up the table, leaving them in ninth place for Xavi to pick up the pieces.

The Dutchman was also previously sacked by Everton prior to managing the Netherlands, who he helped qualify for Euro 2020.

And Koeman, 58, remains a controversial choice in the eyes of many Rangers supporters after Steven Gerrard’s decision to depart and become the new Aston Villa manager last week.

One fan took to Twitter to mock the potential appointment by posting a video of his hypothetical reaction to Koeman being announced.

He captioned it: “When Rangers tweet a picture of the Dutch flag and then in the next tweet announce Koeman,” showing notorious Arsenal fan 'DT' celebrating and suddenly stopping with a distraught look on his face.

The tweet references links to another Dutch legend, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who is favourite to become the next Rangers manager.

Meanwhile, others have tried to see the positives in potentially getting a coach with vast experience in managing some of Europe’s most well-known sides.

One Twitter user reasoned: “Even though us Rangers fans don't want Ronald Koeman to be the next Rangers manager, it's f****** fantastic that Rangers are being linked with these sort of big named managers.”

Another said: “Didn’t expect Koeman to be linked with the Rangers job. Got the Dutch team back on track after missing two major tournaments in a row.

“Know Everton didn’t go well but had his hands tied at Barca. Done really well at Southampton too.”
