Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has explained Cristiano Ronaldo’s mindset as the free agent continues to hunt for a new club, having revealed text messages shared between the pair. The ex-England man was team-mates with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner during the Portugal captain’s first spell at Old Trafford, and had been a strong ally upon his return to United.
Ronaldo has not enjoyed the last six months however, after being made a rotation player for his club by new boss Erik ten Hag he then held an interview with broadcaster Piers Morgan to blast the Dutch coach, the club and owners the Glazers which led to his contract being terminated.
The striker then went to Qatar with the ambition of winning Portugal’s first-ever World Cup, but was dropped by boss Fernando Santos before his campaign ended in tears down the tunnel after Portugal lost 1-0 to Morocco in the quarter-finals. Ronaldo has since been training back at his former club Real Madrid, in a bid to keep up his fitness as he searches for a new club.
Ferdinand explained that he has spoken to Ronaldo since Portugal’s World Cup exit, and the 37-year-old is “preparing” for his next move. “Yeah I’ve spoken to him,” Ferdinand said on his Rio Ferdinand Presents FIVE YouTube channel. “I’ve texted him. He’s chilling, he’s back training and stuff, preparing for the next phase.”

Ronaldo will be hoping to sign a contract at a Champions League club and continue playing at the highest level in Europe, but has failed to secure a move after a disappointing first half of the season at United where he scored just one Premier League goal. He has been linked with moves to the Middle East, however, where he has reportedly been offered a mouth-watering amount of money.
There are claims that Saudi Arabian giant Al Nassr has offered the Portugal captain a three-year contract in which he could earn £173million a year. However the club’s chief has denied speaking to Ronaldo.
“Cristiano was busy recently with the World Cup and I didn’t expect him to negotiate with anyone”, president Musalli Al Muammar told SSC Sports. “We will not speak about other players, I wish the best to Cristiano with any decision.”
There have also been reports linking him with a move to Qatar, as he has been discussing his options with Angelo Henrique, who is also the sporting director of the Qatar Stars League.
Though Ronaldo has been training with Real Madrid and has a good relationship with his former employers, it is not thought that Los Blancos are interested in their ex-star returning to the club for a second spell.
